Things to see in BSB

The downtown of the city is quite likeable and you can start your journey at the waterfront where you’ll enjoy a splendid panorama of the Brunei River, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, and Kampong Ayer. The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is one of the things you should definitely see upon your visit to BSB. It’s located in the very center of the city and is beautifully lit up in the evening. If you’re planning to enter the mosque, make sure your knees and shoulders are all covered up. Kampong Ayer, also known as the “Venice of the East” is a striking village with developed infrastructure. It is home to more than 39,000 people and features a great number of picturesque wooden foot bridges. Get to Kampong Ayer by taking a water taxi or walk via a wooden bridge located near the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Tamu Kianggeh is a place where all locals go for shopping, so if you want to get an authentic feel of BSB, this is a place that you should definitely visit. This open-air market sells fresh produce, cooked food, freshly caught fish and a variety of handicraft items. Right near the Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam you will find the Tamu Selera night market, which is a great spot to enjoy local food at cheap price. If you ever want to just cool off in a green shady area, head to the Tasek Lama Recreational Park. It is also a place frequented by all the locals.

Must-try food

BSB is a real heaven for foodies, but there’s one thing you should be warned about – there’s almost no alcohol sold in Bandar Seri Begawan, as well is in the rest of Brunei due to the Shariah Law. So if you want some wine it’s best to take a few bottles with you. Get acquainted with local cuisine by tasting the somewhat sticky, yet delicious ambuyat. This gooey substance is eaten with a variety of sauces, some of them quite peculiar like the fermented durian sauce.  Local street food is also amazing. To try some, head to the Gadong Night Market where you’ll find loads of skewers packed with yummy chicken oysters and dozens of vendors selling fresh produce. For the dessert get deep-fried bananas with a hot chocolate topping.
